  • What is a Japan Student Visa?

    A Japan Student Visa allows Sri Lankan students to study at Japanese language schools, vocational colleges, or universities. It also grants permission to live in Japan during the study period and to work part‑time under conditions.

  • Do Sri Lankan students need a Certificate of Eligibility (COE)?

    Yes. Every Sri Lankan applicant must obtain a COE, which is issued by Japanese Immigration after the school submits the application on your behalf. You must present this COE when applying for a visa at the Embassy of Japan in Colombo

  • Will the school in Japan apply for the COE on my behalf?

    Yes. Japanese language schools, universities, and vocational institutes apply for the COE directly. The student must send correct documents to the school for submission

  • How long does the Japan Student Visa process take for Sri Lankans?

    Typically 6–12 months, depending on the intake. Common intakes: January, April, July, October. COE is usually issued 1–2 months before arrival.

  • What documents do Sri Lankan students need?

    Required items generally include: Passport Passport-size photos Visa application form COE Educational documents (GCE O/L, A/L, or 12 years completed) Financial proof (bank statements, income certificates, sponsor details) These items are required for both COE and visa submission

  • How much financial proof should Sri Lankan sponsors show?

    Japan requires proof that the student can cover tuition + living expenses. A sponsor (parent/relative) should ideally show around 2 million yen equivalent in annual income/savings. This can be shown through: Bank statements Income statements Tax documents Savings or fixed deposits

  • Can Sri Lankan students work part‑time in Japan?

    Yes. Students may work up to 28 hours per week after obtaining a work-permission stamp at the airport or from immigration.

  • How long can Sri Lankan students stay in Japan with a student visa?

    Language Schools: up to 2 years Vocational Colleges: 1–3 years Universities: Duration of course (up to 4 years 3 months)

  • Do Sri Lankans need Japanese language skills before applying?

    Not necessarily. Many language schools accept students with zero Japanese knowledge. However, IT, business, or vocational courses may require Japanese or English proficiency

  • What happens when a Sri Lankan student arrives in Japan?

    Students receive a Residence Card (Zairyu Card) at the airport. They must register at the city office and join National Health Insurance within 14 days of arrival.
